I have four happy parakeets that I’d eventually like to move home with me to the US. I’m aware that birds can only be received through NY, LA and Miami, and that they have a 30 day quarantine. I imagine that you can’t just show up to the airport with just whatever kind of cage, so does anyone know about this, and/or have gone through the process?
Oh, I live in Mexico, so I don’t think the ban applies to us yet- although I did anticipate that there would be a ban. Anyone know how I can contact the centres by email? The cost, if not a new, extended ban, will determine whether we find a nice family to adopt our birdsies, or try to bring them home with us. Also, I wouldn’t bring them if they are in any danger in quarantine.
But Parakeets (or smaller birds) CANNOT servive on planes because of the thin air…

Search4adog you are wrong. Parakeets are shipped on Airplanes everyday. All birds and other Pets are placed in an eviromently controled area on the plane. I have shipped birds on planes and they were fine.
As for coming into the USA now there is a ban on any incoming and out going birds. The ban was place after the outbreak of Avian Flu was announced.
There are only 3 places in the USA where birds are quarentined. I is in New York and the other is in California, and Florida. It is going to cost a lot too.

I’m certain Sapphyre is correct: quarantine stuff. I’ll address the carrier part of the question, and YES, i have travelled with my grey under my seat in a carrier. Each airline has their own set of rules re: carrier size/dimensions. There is NO single general rule, so make like a good scout and “be prepared”. You need to check with the airline and make certain you know what size/type the aircraft is because not all aircraft are the same. I can’t remember what I flew on a Northwest flight some time ago but I was very fortunate and the seats seemed to be up higher than usual, somehow. Can’t really describe it but there was space in abundance underneath the seats. When we landed, it was as if the whole place went nuts: underneath virtually every seat popped carriers with dogs, cats, birds…ponies…(oknotponies) but i think the experienced pet-owners knew this particular aircraft had spacious under-seat accomodations for their pets. Make certain to comply with their instructions or else YOU’LL BE SORRY!
